Pumpkin Carving

Halloween feel on a 3 day weekend as the kids didn't have school on Monday.  The school made this a teacher professional day which was smart as I'm not sure a lot of learning happens with a Halloween hangover.  This allowed us to spend a night carving pumpkins while working on finishing up with Halloween costumes.  I always find it interesting what size and type of pumpkin the kids pick out.  Micah has always stuck with "tiny, cute" ones, Izzy wants the largest she can find, and Victoria goes for one with a unique feature.  This year it was the curled stem.
This year cleaning out the guts were all on them.  Surprisingly, though there were many gross comments, they all did a good job which did not require my assistance for completion.

My job was cutting the tops and getting them started on cutting out their shapes.

Having a battery operated blade makes this not as labored of an activity and allows for more independance.

The finished products!  Each one of them fits their personalities quite well.
Izzy pointed out that my shirt was the inspiration for her pumpkin which I did not pick up on at all.  I think the likeness was a bit uncanny.

Afterwards, we sat down to enjoy our traditional "carpet picnic".  Carpet picnic is how we spend our Fridays.  We select a movie and have a picnic on the carpet while watching to take a break from day to day meals at the table.  This is a time for all of us to relax.  In the month of October, we chose Halloween themed movies including Casper, Little Shop of Horrors, and the Muppets Haunted Mansion.  Halloween weekend we splurged a bit with a homemade charcutier board.
