Gage County Fair 2019

One of the surest signs summer is here is the county fair.  There is ample planning throughout the year since the kids are only out of school 4 weeks prior.  Thus many projects are worked on over the weekends during the school year.  We've enjoyed dreaming up projects and working on them in Boston.  However getting them back to the farm is more challenging.  We also needed several of Oma & Opa's "tools" to put on finishing touches to several projects.
Epoxy was a medium used for one project each of the kids.  Micah's was to create a string of batman lights using a mold with yellow & black epoxy.  He enjoyed helping drill the holes to string the lights through.
Izzy and John worked on finishing her leaf display case using Opa's work shed.  This was her epoxy project.
There always seems to be time for humor even with projects. Leave it to Avery to use some leftover fondant to make everyone giggle.
Izzy wanted to try cake decorating this year.  We decided to stick with our brain cake which she's made twice before.  Though we love it for being gross and disgusting, the judge thought it was unappealing and thus she received a blue. Not a bad place to start for our first time in cake decorating!  What's better is the judge had the feeling the cake was meant to elicit... great for any Halloween party.

This year turned out to be a great year for Izzy.  We may have had some tears shed in completion of these two projects, but there were smiles when she saw how well she did.  Both projects earned a place at the State Fair.

Izzy's leaf display also made it to the State Fair.
Not yet old enough for 4-H, Micah & Victoria entered their projects in Open Class.  Many of their projects did well and resulted in smiles and pride for these two.
Because 4-H projects have to be entered online now, I missed creating an entry for her fencing bag.  We therefore entered it in Open Class with Izzy winning champion in her section.  That made up for mommy's mistake.
Micah's pine wood derby car also won champion in his section.  This is his second car.  Next year he wants to try something different... an airplane.  Oh boy John...
I too entered Micah's scale mail for fun.  They were intrigued by this when I entered it not knowing exactly what was it.  Much to my surprise not only did it win in the section entered, but it won reserve champion.
Victoria voiced that next year she wants to win a champion ribbon.  She is now officially the last grandchild (save for Aggie) who hasn't won one yet.  We'll see what we can come up with for next year.
I was contacted the Izzy had received and award but not further specifics as to what exactly.  To everyone's surprise, she won two awards... junior reserve champion in sewing and junior champion in sewing construction.  She was also awarded a pair of Gingher scissors.  I can't wait to try them out for her next projects.

The fair also has other entertaining activities besides projects.  We got a kick out of this interactive robot that was being controlled remotely by another adolescent 4-Her.

The car racing was an activity that several of the grandkids wanted to try.  Though no one won, the experience was worth waiting for a turn.

The rides and games are always the finale to the fair.  This year Opa & Oma were generous in purchasing wrist bands for unlimited rides.  At the end of the night, Victoria was the one who truly got her money's worth.  She met another girl her age who both decided to hop down the line of rides together while the others decided to waiting for the bungee experience.

Victoria and her new ride friend.

Adults were booted from this year's Ferris wheel ride.  A sign the girls are nearing adolescents.

The final stop before going home after enjoying the midway was funnel cakes.  The Elvis Presley (bananas, chocolate, & peanut butter) was eaten in minutes.  Maybe next year we need two of those!
