1st Family Camping Experience

On a whim for a new summer experience, John suggested we take the kids camping.  We headed west to Shelburne Falls where John had gone fishing in the past.  We were in luck as they had only two camping spots left for that weekend.  The down side was that these two camping spots were the farthest from the bathrooms and showers.  We either had to walk the half mile or drive.  In order to prevent non-campers from entering the area, a rope hung across the driveway.  Every time you wanted to come or go, someone had to move the rope.  Micah took this job on proudly the whole weekend.
John worked hard on packing quintessential camping foods... hotdogs, s'mores and sandwiches.  We took in brunch one day which was a treat.
All 5 of us could not fit into one tent.  So we divided up into a boy's tent and girl's tent.  The kids never complained about how they slept (sleeping bags on air mattresses).  John and I, on the other hand, slept on the ground with just sleeping bags.  None of us were ready for the sun to be up bright and early at 5:30am every morning.

A surprise the first morning was taking the kids tubing down the Deerfield River.  They let water our of the dam in the late morning/mid-afternoon which raises the level of water enough for kayaking, rafting, tubing and jumping off of rock formations.  We rented two double inner tubes and one single.  Victoria rode with me and Micah rode with John.  Because we rented these, no rope was available to tie them together.  None of us thought that would be a major problem.  However, Izzy got tangled in a tree that recently fell along the shore and started to get separated from us.  Panic set in as she tried to get untangled as the four of us kept floating downstream.  She managed to get loose but at the cost of a pretty big scratch on her arm from one of the branches.  I then tied her tube to my life vest given a long string for adjustments to the vest.  When we hit a few rapids, Victoria and I bumped around a rock.  Because we were tied to Izzy, we drug her inner tube  over the rock causing her to fall out.  Good thing the water is not too deep as I could stand and hold the inner tube until we were all able to get back in and finish our adventure.  Izzy has since dubbed this summer as "the summer I almost died!".... fitting for my theatrical child.

After rafting we explored the Berkshire Ski Resort.  Our last adventure for this camping trip was taking a ride down the Thunderbolt Mountain Coaster.  This is a combination of a roller coaster and alpine slide.  Each cart is equipped with its own braking system allowing for us to choose how fast we wanted to take this course.  After talking to her about Izzy's personality (she would like to go fast but won't say so because she's nervous, she said Izzy didn't really have a choice.  They were going to go down fast whether or not she wanted to.  I guess that is what you get when you ask for someone to go with you who's done it multiple times.  After all was said and done, Izzy loved it (as I knew she would).  The kids had such a great time they are now asking for a bigger tent for Christmas so we can do it again.  Maybe by Christmas John will have recuperated enough to want to do it again...ha!

Bures Family Reunion - Day #3

The last day of our time at the reunion was filled with a kayaking adventure.  Izzy was able to kayak by herself and was grateful Aunt Diane switched kayaks mid-way.  Though her initial kayak was smaller, it was hard to maneuver in the water.  Micah enjoyed one-on-one time with Opa.  Victoria enjoyed mommy all to herself.

Bures Family Reunion - Day #2 & River Fun

Day #2's activity was a trip to Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello.  The home has been upgraded with a/c which provided a break from the exceptionally hot, humid day.  Besides take a tour of the home, we also joined the Slavery at Monticello tour which was the adult's favorite experience of the day.

The kids enjoyed learning how to use a quill to write similar to how letters and the Deceleration of Independence was written in the 1770's.

The river was a built in activity this entire reunion.  The cousins daily enjoyed swimming and frolicking at the edge.  We spend a part of one afternoon tubing downstream from Allen's cabin to where we were staying.  The cousins were also "brave" following Avery across the river to a long rock to explore.  Swimming to and from was a bit challenging given the current.  It helped that three adults were able to assist them across.  None of us ventured back to that rock during this trip though Avery probably wanted to do so.

Bures Family Reunion - Team Building

As a way for extended family to bond with each other outside the comforts of their immediate family members, Rachelle devised a team building experience.  We divided into 5 teams and were given a list of tasks to find, do, sing, etc to earn points.  The more challenging the task, the bigger the points that were assigned.  We then had 1.5 hours to try and complete as many of the 55 tasks as possible.  Team names:  Sparkle, Justice League, Gary, Mud Bugs and Vortex.

Task:  hold 6 inner tubes at one time by the youngest team member
Task - take a picture with team members jumping in that air so that no feet are touching the ground
Task - nab a picture of Brent without his hat on
Task - take a picture as a group with Uncle Allen
Task - create your own team song.  There was a sing off between the Justice League and Mud Bugs.  In the end, Mud Bugs won.
In second place - Team Sparkle
And in 1st place (who won by well over 70 points) - Team Gary

Bures Family Reunion 2018 - Day #1

A combination of family and 4th of July celebration was the backdrop for this year's Bures family reunion.  We returned to Allen & Simone's cabin near Radford, VA along the New River.  The last time I was here was in my 3rd year of medical school.  I returned with 3 kids this time ready to share the same adventures plus so new ones.

A family reunion wouldn't be a family reunion without a group picture.  Gary's clan wore Husker Red while Allen's wore blue.
Nothing beats unstructured fun with cousins!
To make the get together even sweeter, we also celebrated Allen and dad's birthdays.  Milestones for both of them.
For entertainment, we hosted the 2nd version of Bures' Got Talent.  As with the inaugural show, this one was a crowd pleaser despite the heat and rain.
We showed the family our version of the "Evolution of Dance" going through popular dances through time including the Twist, Chicken Dance, Macarena, YMCA and M.C. Hammer dance.
Izzy wanted to demonstrate the correct footwork and moves that she's learned over the past year in fencing.
Oma's rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star via the nose flute.  Who knew!
Opa continued to amaze the crowd with his magic tricks with the Hooie stick still stumping everyone.
The Dieckman's are Broadway bound with their rendition of You'll Be Back from the play, Hamilton.
Allen & Simone took us down memory lane with popular children's songs including How Much is that Doggie in the Window.
Despite moving under the tent due to the rain, the Sharrer's dance performance wasn't even phased.
The finale was the Hall's and their telekinetic powers.
The night ended with rounds of corn hole and smiles.

Before we all turned in for bed, the grandkids gave Opa a Midwest inspired birthday present.
